During this time, I was able to teach a small group of students in a Grade 4/5 class at Harwin Elementary in Prince George, BC. This was my first experience being a “teacher” in a classroom. I didn’t have a lot of time with these students so I spent a good portion doing team building activities to create that relationship. I taught social studies and I focused on natural resources specific to the Prince George region. We did lots of hands on activities such as creating a canoe, origami, and story cubes. This experience really validated my passion in becoming an elementary teacher.

During this practicum, I taught a Grade 5/6 class at Mission Central Elementary in Mission, BC. I was very nervous to teach at an intermediate level because I have always imagined myself teaching primary; however, this experience was amazing. I was able to quickly form relationships with the students. The 3 weeks went by super fast and I wish I was able to spend some more time with those students. It was very heart warming when some of the students asked me to be their teacher up until Grade 12. I was also able to tag along for one field trip, our class went skating! We all walked over to the recreation centre. This was a great way for me to bond with the students outside of the classroom. All of the kids wanted me to help them tie their skates -how adorable! Our classroom also participated in the annual school wide Carnaval. Since I had a grade 5/6 class we were in charge of creating all of the games.

During this practicum, I taught a Grade 2 class at Terry Fox Elementary in Abbotsford, BC. It took me some time to connect with the students in this class because I was unable to meet them before practicum started but once I built that relationship my practicum went really well. I taught a breadth of lessons including sign language, physical education, and careers. Our class also practiced for the Christmas concert during my practicum which was a lot of fun. A few students gave me a gift on my last day and one student cried. It was such a heart warming experience and I am happy that I was able to touch a few hearts in the short amount of time I was there.

During this practicum, I taught a Grade 2 class at McMillian Elementary in Abbotsford, BC. This was my longest practicum and it was definitely a difficult transition for me in the beginning because I was teaching full time almost immediately. There is a lot more to teaching than I realized but I am thankful for this experience because I have grown a lot as an educator. During this practicum, I focused on language arts, math, social studies, and science. It did take me a few weeks to truly build a strong relationship with a majority of the class but that is expected. As a class we participated in lots of fun activities and experiments. This practicum went by really fast! While I was in charge, it was nice to have the opportunity to try new things and incorporate various strategies. I am now more aware of how I would want to run my own classroom in the future.
